Module 3: STRESS MANAGEMENT

Hello listeners! today you will be going to learn about stress management. Understanding the different types of stress can help us manage our reactions and maintain better mental health. Broadly, stress can be categorized into three main types: acute stress, episodic acute stress, and chronic stress.

Acute Stress: This is the most common form of stress, often experienced as a direct response to a specific event or challenge, such as a tight deadline, a car accident, or an argument. Acute stress is short-term and is usually resolved when the situation changes or is dealt with. Symptoms may include emotional distress, muscular problems, stomach issues, and transient overarousal, but recovery is typically quick once the stressor is removed.

Episodic Acute Stress: Some individuals experience acute stress frequently; this is known as episodic acute stress. This type often affects those who take on too much, are perpetually disorganized, or those who self-identify as having type A personalities. Symptoms extend from those of acute stress and may lead to high blood pressure and heart disease. Individuals with episodic acute stress may benefit from professional help to manage their stressors and responses.

Chronic Stress: This type of stress grinds away over a long period, often due to unescapable situations like unhappy marriages, problematic jobs, or poverty. Chronic stress can be harmful, leading to serious health problems such as depression, diabetes, heart issues, and a weakened immune system. Addressing chronic stress often requires changing the external circumstances, if possible, alongside therapeutic interventions to develop healthier coping mechanisms.
