Module 6: STRESS MANAGEMENT

Experiencing tremendous physical or psychological stress can have profound effects on a person’s well-being and functioning. Physically, the body’s response to stress triggers a cascade of physiological reactions known as the fight-or-flight response. Hormones like adrenaline and cortisol surge, leading to increased heart rate, rapid breathing, heightened alertness, and tense muscles. Prolonged exposure to such stress can contribute to various health issues, including high blood pressure, weakened immune system, digestive problems, and sleep disturbances. These effects can impact overall quality of life and increase vulnerability to illness.

Psychologically, severe stress can lead to emotional and cognitive challenges. It can manifest as anxiety, depression, irritability, or mood swings. Cognitive functions such as concentration, memory, and decision-making may also be impaired under extreme stress. Chronic stress can exacerbate existing mental health conditions or contribute to the development of new ones. Additionally, coping mechanisms like substance abuse or unhealthy behaviours may arise as individuals attempt to manage overwhelming stressors, further complicating their well-being.

In the long term, the cumulative impact of enduring high levels of stress can lead to burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. Burnout is often characterized by feelings of detachment, reduced performance, and a sense of hopelessness or cynicism. It can affect relationships, work productivity, and overall life satisfaction. Seeking support, practicing stress-management techniques, and addressing underlying issues are crucial in mitigating the detrimental effects of prolonged stress on both physical and psychological health.
