Psychosocial Well being & Safety

Psychological well-being is about being well psychologically, which means that we can function well when we feel generally good about ourselves and about life and feel a sense of life satisfaction, a sense that our lives are on the right track.

Psychological safety refers to a shared belief within a group or team that it is safe to take
interpersonal risks without fear of negative consequences. It creates an environment where
individuals feel comfortable expressing themselves, sharing their ideas, and taking risks without
fearing being judged, ridiculed, or punished.

Psychological safety fosters open communication, trust, and collaboration within teams or organisations. When individuals feel psychologically safe, they are more likely to contribute their unique perspectives, ask questions, admit mistakes, and engage in constructive debates. It encourages creativity, innovation, and learning within the group.

Psychosocial safety incorporates the following elements:

1. Workload and job demands: Ensuring that workloads are manageable and employees have
the necessary resources to fulfil their tasks.

2. Control and autonomy: Giving individuals control and influence over their work processes
and decision-making.

3. Social support: Encouraging supportive relationships and effective communication within the
workplace.

4. Work-life balance: Promoting policies and practices that enable employees to maintain a
healthy balance between work and personal life.

5. Organizational culture: Fostering a positive, inclusive culture that values employee well-being
and promotes a healthy work environment.

Psychological well-being is not simply being happy. It is a combination of things (attitudes and
strategies) that relate more to a sense of achievement, purpose and contentment with our lives. No
one can be constantly happy. We all go through times when we feel anxious, stressed or down, and
we must recognise that this is mostly a temporary state that won’t dominate us for the rest of our
lives.
